Is a High Angle Rope Rescue Training Course Worth It for Your Staff?

Is a High Angle Rope Rescue Training Course Worth It for Your Staff?

If something goes wrong while working at high heights, the first thing everyone wants to do is call 911. Unfortunately, however responsive the 911 team may be, those few moments you wait for their arrival can mean the difference between saving a life and being a little too late.

Better preparedness for such unforeseen eventualities require equipping your team with the necessary skills to reliably and safely rescue their colleague whenever the situation calls for it. Besides, having a competent in-house rescue team is a plus since they are more familiar with the site than external rescuers.

So yes, a high-angle rope rescue training course is worth it for your staff. Call us about group bookings today!

What Is High Angle Rope Rescue

High-angle rope rescue is a rescue operation on a high terrain with a slope angle of 50 degrees or more. The rescuers use ropes (plus additional hauling and hoisting equipment as needed) to access the site and get themselves and the victims out.

Ideally, rescue operations become more technical as the slope steepens; hence specialized training is required to help rescuers evacuate the victims safely from the site. High-angle rescue operations also require the team to be in excellent physical condition.

Examples of sites and facilities that fall under the high-elevation category include cranes, wind turbines, water towers, tunnels, mine shafts, sewer systems, pipe racks, wells, etc.

Importance of High-Angle Rope Rescue Training Course

If something goes wrong while working at high heights, leaving the worker suspended dangerously, despite the apparent fall, the risk of dying from suspension trauma increases with every minute that passes. Other times, the worker may be injured already and requiring immediate evacuation for treatment or to avert another potential risk resulting from the mishap. In this case, having a competent team that can rescue their colleague swiftly is key to the safety of both the rescuers and the trapped or injured individual.

Getting your team through a high-angle rope rescue training course is an investment worth making. This is especially crucial when no rescue agencies are located near the site. Again, besides upping your risk management protocols, a team conversant with rescue procedures is more keen on ensuring the necessary safety standards are maintained.

What Does the Course Cover

The high-angle rope rescue training course equips trainees with the skills they need to rescue trapped or injured workers on high elevations safely and timely. This usually involves practical exercises; hence the trainee must be physically fit to perform rescue operations on high-angle elevations.

Some of the activities the course may cover include:

  • Using scenario training exercises to learn problem-solving skills in different rescue situations
  • Carrying out challenging rescues, such as collaborating with a second rescuer to lift and manipulate another trainee from different site settings
  • Using rope techniques (advantage systems) to hoist another trainee etc.

The depth of the high-angle rope rescue training course may depend on the unique aspects of your terrain, so it could be customized to cover more lessons than the general basics of the course.
