This is the OSSA, or Oil Sands Safety Associated certified training course for workers who will be operating elevated work platforms such as genie lifts, aerial work platforms, boom lifts, and scissor lifts. It is a combination of in class learning and practical experience where the student must properly operate, inspect and maintain the lift.
Elevated work platforms are a great tool for workers to use to quickly and safely access elevated work areas. They replace scaffold, lifts can make for great cost savings, when compared to the use of scaffold and fall protection. However, workers who do not understand the hazards of using lifts are at risk. In a ten year period from 1992 to 2003, just over 300 workers were killed from improper lift use, in the USA, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In Canada that number was about 30. Various causes exist, workers fell from lifts, were ejected, lifts collapsed, tapped over, and traffic collided with lifts. The reason these needless fatalities occurred, is because operators did not understand the limitations of their lift.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be certified to operate a lift on the OSSA members sites, and on the majority of sites in Canada. The course is 8 hours long, and begins with a class theory component. Workers learn about:
In the practical safety training the following elements are covered:
At the end of the training, workers will have a functional understanding of genie lifts, aerial work platforms, boom lifts, and scissor lifts, and be certified in the OSSA EWP Elevated Work Platform Course.
